Wuhan Economic Belt

This region we call the ‘water country’ because it is the center of the Yangtze River and when it meets up with the Han River in Wuhan and there southwards derives the name the Jianghan Plain and China’s 2nd largest lake; Lake Dongting in Hunan province which lies Hunan’s largest city and capital, Changsha. Then, just past Wuhan lies Poyang Lake right by Jiangxi’s largest city and its capital of Nanchang. There are Rivers and Lakes throughout this region.

In this report, we look at this region with specific focus on the triangle of cities that dominate this area, namely Wuhan and its Wuhan Economic Circle of prefectures along with looking at Greater Changsha, a young vibrant rapidly growing city, and Greater Nanchang which makes for the bottom right side of this triangular economy. A total of 170 million consumers live within these three provinces in this ‘land of rice and fish’.

Its total GDP reached $2 trillion in 2022, and if it were a country, its GDP is at the levels of Italy, Russia and Canada. Over the last few years billions of dollars of foreign direct investment has poured into this region with its highest place being Wuhan. Wuhan stands out in China because it has received more French foreign investment than any other city in China, and is home to the China operations of Electrifill, Peugeot Citron, the PSA group and Renault. Additionally, Changsha stands out as being one of the top five fastest growing economies in China.
