In this report we look at the entire northeast region and each of its sub-parts. It covers Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang provinces along with the northeast prefectures in Inner Mongolia including Chifeng, Tongliao, Xingan League and Hulunbuir.

This region is commonly referred to as China’s “Rust Belt” which is dominated by state-owned industry. After the 2020 census, it’s clear that younger generations are moving away from this region. Besides the major cities of Harbin, Changchun, Shenyang and Dalian which combined have a positive migration of 4 million individuals, the rest of the region’s areas have declined by over 10 million persons.

This report looks at where the current and up-and-coming hotspots are throughout the region in terms of where the major foreign retailers are located and why, population trends by age, sex, education and the like, and what the economic, trade, and investment climates are like.

In fact, there are a-number-of districts and cities where the real market is throughout the region, and with a pent-up abundance of household savings deposits since Covid, consumers are starting to spend once again. This region has been somewhat isolated from global trade in which its closest foreign neighbors are Russia and the Koreas.
